The Maras salt pools captivated us from up close and from afar, almost like a three-dimensional version of an impressionist painting. Hundreds of terraced, shallow pools extend into the valley like a smattering of paint samples spread out on the stairs. Each pool its own shade of terra cotta, with the exception of a few opaque outliers. The sight is stunning. Equally dazzling are the views from a few inches away. Tiny fractals of salt crystals living on rust-colored rocks.
